Terrible Quality Control, Ruined a little girls Christmas February 3, 2010 GdP (North Eastern USA) Upon arival of the tiem it looked perfect. Though it was laid flat at the bottom of a box and paper protection only on the top it still had a hint of water damage on the TV's Coby box.
As it was brand new WITH QUALITY CONTROL STICKERS ALL OVER IT I had wrapped it and it sat for ther holiday.
I had gotten a call from my 11 year old's mother who had informed me that it did not even turn on (Right out of the box)Being that a licenced electrician would most likely be the one setting it up, I felt confident that it was treated more than adiquitly. I would like to mention that their is also a retired TV repair man in the family who would know more about it than anyone reading this.
I did send it back and amazon sent a replacement immediatly. I haven't checked to see if I was credited for shipping and\or if I was charged for both TV's
All in all, I think this is my last Amazon purchase. BACK TO WALLY WORLD !
P.S. if it didnt have QC (Quality control) stickers all over the box I wouldn't be as aggitated by this. It never turned on.
The next TV worked though
PLEASE! don't buy if you are looking for one that will last February 3, 2010 Twin Mom (Maryland) I rarely write reviews but I (almost) always read them before I make a purchase......this purchase was the exception to my rule. I have never been more disappointed with an electronic purchase in my life. If the bottom line for you is price, please, please, please consider an alternative. My kids have been without their tv/dvd for going on 2 months now and this is why--I purchased this t.v in Aug. 09 for my children's room, primarily to use for dvd's. I figured having the television component would be great as they got older. If only I had not let the (great) price sway my decision from going with a better known brand for a few bucks more. The problems started 24 hours after I set it up. The remote (without warning) stopped working altogether. It was not dropped, mishandled, etc. I called the manufacturer and was told to send a $6 money order to them and that the turnaround time would be 6-8 weeks! I had no choice so I sent it hoping 6-8 weeks was the timeframe they gave everyone. I was wrong. Week #7 the new remote arrived. Mind you I could only start the dvd and let it run all the way through because there was no way to fast forward, rewind, view special features, etc. without the remote. It was simply a design flaw. Once the remote arrived, it worked perfectly. No more problems with the remote. Dec 09 (4 months later) I put in a dvd, I heard a click and nothing else. It would not recognize that a disc was even in the player. I read the manual that recommended turning the whole unit off for 30 minutes to allow the unit to reset itself. I turned it off for 30 minutes, then 1 hour, then overnight with no success. I called the manufacturer because it comes with a 1 year warranty but was told since the problem was not with the remote control or the power cord, the warranty had expired. Parts and labor was only covered for the first 90 days! I was smart enough (that's all relative) to purchase the extended warranty offered by the place of purchase (a different online electronics retailer) so I called to find out where I could take the unit. They told me this manufacturer did not have any repair centers in the entire state in which I lived (major metropolitan area in the east). I was told that I had to ship the unit to them for repair and they WOULD NOT cover the shipping costs. I took the unit to one of the two places STIPULATED only to be told it would cost ME $82.93 to ship 'regular ground.' I opted to take it to a local repair shop thinking it may just be cheaper to have it fixed myself. Another 1 1/2 weeks goes by only to be told by the repair shop that the entire dvd module simply gave out and needed to be replaced. I REPEAT--I have never been more disappointed with an electronic purchase in my life. If the bottom line for you is price, please, please, please consider an alternative. My kids have been without their tv/dvd for going on 2 months now! Depending on what the manufacturer tells me, I will probably end up buying a better brand for a few extra dollars!
Great for the price February 1, 2010 D. Handy (Gilbert, AZ) For the price you can't beat this TV/DVD combo. Nice bright screen. Good contrast. Viewing angle is good, but not as good as the more expensive TVs. The only thing that isn't good about this TV is the remote. Poorly laid out and not well labeled. Isn't a big issue for what I am using this TV for. Not using the remote much. If you need a great remote and extremely wide viewing angles spend more money on a different TV. If you want a nice TV/DVD combo and are on a budget, this is the TV to get. I have only had the unit for a few months, so no thoughts on its longevity. Amazon was amazing. Purchased it with the super cheap shipping and was very surprised when it arrived a day later. I always check Amazon when purchasing things because they are so reliable.
great choice January 12, 2010 Jeep girl I purchased this for my son to use at college. small enough to easily move and still have a larger screen. the dvd player works great and saves on needing another machine.
Don't do it! December 20, 2009 LiLac22281 (NC) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Appearance: Since the remote was, ahem, not good, I had to frequently use the buttons on the tv. They were not separated very well and I pushed the wrong buttons all the time Everything else looked okay, but the buttons were a major turn-off.
Ease of use: buttons on tv and remote--horrible.
Features: It had a SD card reader, USB reader, AND DVD which all worked great. You can put the name of your channels in the tv. You can't set the time?! There are features on the menu that can't be accessed. Sound is not so great for playing music.
Picture quality: Was not better than my 2003 19-inch RCA crt tv but was okay for the price.
Portability: Was very light-weight, which was the main reason I bought a flat screen tv.
DVD player: I don't remember having any problems with it.
I called Coby about the remote and the features that couldn't be accessed. The lady told me that the batteries probably needed to be changed. The batteries had a "made" date and an expiration date on them. I don't remember the expiration date, but I told her they were made in April 2009. No explaination for that. I asked about features that couldn't be accessed and she said I had to have digital cable in order for the time and other stuff to be accessed. I told her that there were digital channels on my tv...anyway. That remote, though is what made me pawn the tv. I threw the remote up against the wall and said to myself, "Hey, I'll just go get a universal remote!" Yeah, right. I went to Radio Shack, Best Buy, Big Lots, Wal-mart, Maxway and Family Dollar. There aren't any remotes that support Coby tvs. Thanks Coby! Sheesh!
So, all-in-all, the remote killed it for my rating.
